My brows and I have not always had a great relationship. I was born with blonde, sparse brows that were invisible with a photo flash and one of the last things on my priority list as a young teen. Much like other sixteen-year olds, I began pencilling them in, tweezing the hairs I thought did not belong, and watching YouTube tutorials for eyebrow tips and tricks. Looking back, I remember being proud of the brows I had created each morning – but, seeing old photos has made me wish that someone would have taken that brow pencil out of my hand and snapped it in half.
Fast forward to 2015; I had heard through a friend that a girl only a few years older than me had started specializing in brows and also had experience as a makeup artist. I booked an appointment with G, who I knew back then as Gianna, and arrived at 580 Academy Road where G was renting space from Bare Body Sugaring. I was apprehensive as I knew how sparse my brows were and was unsure that G would have solution for me. My consultation began and my ears perked up as G explained this newly resurfaced technique called Microblading.
I knew right away that Microblading was something I wanted. Before booking, I asked G every question I could think of; from will it hurt to how long will it last? Her answers put me at ease, so I proceeded to book the soonest appointment available for my first Microblading session! I withdrew the money from my savings account and arrived at my appointment very excited but also slightly nervous. As walked through the door, I was handed a glass of lemonade by G as she greeted me smiling and shouting “hello gorgeous!”. The procedure went as planned, my brows healed perfectly, I had my initial touch up and was informed by G that I would not need another touch up for approximately 8-24 months.
It was an incredible feeling to suddenly have brow confidence. I knew so many women that could benefit from this innovative service, and from G’s expertise of everything ‘eyebrow’. I continued seeing G every month or so for a Brow Shaping and Tint to keep my brow hair in-line with my new Microblading. Over time, I realized that my brow hair was growing into the shape she had created for me, and that hair was growing in thicker too! G let me know at one of my regular appointments that Microblading is known to promote hair growth - what a bonus!
G and I got to know each other better at my monthly appointments, and I was honoured when G asked me to come work for her. I began with the business in 2016, shortly after G and her team of four Brow Specialists moved into the first Brows by G space at 1682 Grant Avenue. The opportunity to help grow a local small business that gave clients the experience that G gave me when I first came to see her sounded like a dream come true. My original before and after photo from 2015, shortly after G had started Microblading.
Fast forward to 2017; it was time for my Microblading to be touched up. As a business, we had put more time, research and training into becoming experts in another permanent cosmetic procedure called Micropigmentation. Micropigmentation isn’t better than Microblading, it creates a different look and allowed me to have the bolder, filled in brows I had always dreamed about. (see December’s blog post for more information on the wonders of Micropigmentation) If I could go back to 2015, I still would have started my brow journey with Microblading. It was the perfect amount of cosmetic tattooing for me as a beginner. It was natural, easily adjusted to, and gave me the perfect number of hair-like strokes that I needed. Over time, I became more confident in my look and Brows by G was able to accommodate that progression with a variety of options that we offer to our clientele.
Having my eyebrows Microbladed all those years ago was one of the greatest things I have ever done for myself. It was a great example of self-care; something that many of us are focusing on in 2019. I had brow confidence for the first time in my life, and that confidence sparked other confidence boosting actions that have helped shape how I now hold myself as a twenty-five-year old woman. As we explain to clients, your brows convey your expression, feelings, thoughts and frame your face. I hope my story empowers you to take time for yourself, book a consultation and come see what we can do for you.
